Many of my clients are individual coaches and consultants. Others are small businesses.

What I find worrisome about them is their ability to continue promising the things I promise prospects, clients and customers in my marketing efforts on their behalf. When clients hire me solely for writing their marketing plan or managing their social media, the final steps in the sales process are all theirs to manage. And in some cases, I doubt they can pull it off.

Unless you can hire a full-time salesman, a large part of your job as a business owner is selling the very products or services you offer.

When you’re responsible for marketing and fulfillment, you have to know how to write the story and tell it.

It’s my first time to your site and I’m excited to have found it!

I think the real problem is that businesses are promising the wrong things. If they don’t create the proper expectation and can’t deliver then they are in trouble, right?

The fact is that many businesses exist to solve a problem, but they don’t know how to talk with people about what their problems are or how they can make their customers live’s better.

If I can promise you that I because either I’m competent or my product or service can deliver, and I can prove it, then promises are not really so hard.

Especially in a world of gimmicks. Southwest Airlines comes to mind for me. I fly them often and I’m rarely late to where I want to be without a really good reason. They promise to get me where I want to go and on-time; and they deliver. They also promise that my bags can fly free, lol…

If we understand our prospects and customers from their point of view, it makes offering a promise we can deliver a lot simpler. Would you agree with that?
