I paraphrased and attributed this thinking to your article and example. He got it. Great post.

The company stopped making the top quality products many years ago and continued to make money off their reputation for a long time before the consumer started catching on. This was before the web was popular. Here is an interesting thought: It only costs maybe $25 more in material cost to make a quality reliable appliance than to make the cheap one. Maytag chose to drop the $25 to the bottom line, but ended up having to spend more in advertising to keep their brand myth alive. I would not doubt that their advertising cost is now more than what they originally saved by watering down their product. No matter what they do now, they will never regain their reputation. Us older folks still like the thought of the reliable Maytag, but reality has forced us to consider other options.

Especially for brands like Maytag that never had direct to consumer access before. This is a big opportunity to reinforce their brand position in the market.

@Moe Rubenzahl Trying helps, and they tried. It’s the misalignment that is the real issue.

Customer service is not an outsourced call center only, it is engaging people where the choose to participate in conversations. We must all adapt to the Multi-Platform world we live in today… Time to staff up, to do customer service in real time, on all channels…. more investment, in online reputation management, a reality of today!

(And now I am terrified that I bought a Maytag washer last week! 😉
